Film Title design in Illustrator and Adobe After Effects.
Objective: to choose a film created by a Toronto Film student and create a Film title.
The film chosen for the Film Title design is “MIMES” by Noah Pelley
Opening title sequence with main credits: 30 seconds
Rolling credits 15 seconds
Total 45 seconds
Same song is used for both sequences

The film conveys an eerie and dark mood. There is a young woman who ends up being trapped in
a room with mimes. There is a rapid build up to the suspense and drama. The mime is scary and
neurotic. There is an escalation of external conflict between the girl and the mimes. It is both physical
and psychological.
The film title is set in black and white to play of the mime’s aesthetic. The font chosen is “Chiller”
because it gives a frightening feel. There are 4 different frames within the film title. The first frame
which has the title with the largest font size and includes who the film is by. The title and name
both have an undertone of red. The color has a strong contrast against black and white. The color is
commonly used in scary films which the viewer can easily identify with. Red is used through each frame
to underline important information.
There is a drop of blood that occurs at the very beginning of the film title. This is to immediately set
the mood. The drop falls right of the red undertone of the letter “M”. Symbolizing a chilling story that
is about to unfold.
Various images are used throughout the film title. Two images of mimes that appear during the
sequence. An image with two hands appearing twice using opacity in a quick motion showing the
image going in and out. This action goes with the beat of the music and is symbolic of feeling trapped
as the hands press against the surface in and out showing pressure. A single hand image is used to
convey a similar message within the sequence. All images are inverted to continue the black and white
theme.
The title at the beginning slowly disappears by a scatter effect and comes back during the rolling
credits with the same effect. This effect is mysterious and when paired with the music feels sinister.
Another effect is used to go from one scene to another. The burn film effect which adds drama.
Two videos are used in this film title. A woman screaming which is something familiar in most scary
film settings and a video of flowing ink which purely is used for a dramatic effect. Audio is picked
separately to specifically have a loud screeching scream. This is intentional so the viewer is startled
right before the film begins. The music for this piece is dramatic and has repetitive thumping sounds
to convey that something frightening is coming.
